Geology

sol silicieux sol argilo calcaire sol gravelo sableux

The vast majority of the Saint Pourçain appellation is based on a pool of collapsed soil created by the rogenetic movements of the Alps; this has created three different types of soils :

Silicious soils in the south with a large amount of granite and metamorphic rocks.

Limestone and clay soils in the middle section of the vineyard area, gathered in the pool of collapsed soil of the Bouble, Sioule and Allier rivers. These soils are the heart of the appellation.

Sandy soils (a geological formation also called ‘Sables du Bourbonnais’ – the sands from the Bourbon area). These have been deposited by the rivers over various geological eras.
